Sometimes fabric literally speaks to me.
I saw this fabric at a local store a couple of weeks ago and for no reason at all I bought 6 yards of it. It spoke to me. I had to have it. I had no project to use it for. No clients in need. No rooms in my home that could use it. But I felt like we were meant for each other and so I bought it.
I started designing a whole room around it in my head. A magical room full of pinks and browns and blues. So pretty.
So I called my mom and begged her to let me design her guest room around it. She said yes and the planning has begun! I can’t tell you how extremely liberating it has been to have a room that I can do whatever the heck I want in. My mom is letting me take full control and go crazy. The only problem is the budget.
$500.
So I am getting creative. I want to keep you up to date on the progress of this room and I’m going to start with a special project I did last week. I was inspired by this image.

I saved it from a magazine years and years ago and I loved it. So I designed a special bulletin board for the guest room using this concept.
I started with this mirror for $50 from the Ikea “as-is” section. I broke out the mirror so I just had the frame and the nice wood backing part of it.
I then took some cork that I bought at Hobby Lobby and started hot glueing it to the wood backing. Once I had glued it on I wrapped the whole thing in some striped fabric that I bought for $3 a yard at a local fabric store. I put the fabric-wrapped cork back in the frame and attached a sunburst mirror with ribbon.
Drumroll please….
I now have a large beautiful custom made cork board with a sunburst mirror on top. The mirror was around $25 bought at Hobby Lobby for half-off. I plan to touch up the frame a bit to make it more gold. This is going to be one of the big “wow” pieces in the room and I’m so excited about it.
I can’t wait to share with you more progress on this room. It is coming together so well!
That fabric really is beautiful! LOVE the bulletin board. Lucky mom! She'll have the cutest guest room around:)
Fantastic! I want one.

I get it. Only I have problems narrowing down all the fabrics that speak to me….
and clothes…
and shoes…
and definitely purses.
I do love that fabric though…as I do almost everything you pick out and do!!!
Ahmazing, as always!
That made me laugh. I'm glad I'm not the only one who buys yards of fabric with no purpose. The cork board is so gorgeous! I just found your blog and so glad i did!
LOVE IT!!! Sooo beautiful…can't wait to see the finished project!
I have the same "fabric problem." I am much happier shopping for fabric than shoes or clothes. I always say I want a bigger house – not for the space but so that I can buy more fabric for curtains and pillows!
I believe I recognize the photo from the now defunct but awesome Cottage Living magazine.
Looking forward to the big reveal!
Gosh you are talented!
What an adorable idea! I love it. I can't wait to see the whole room. I'm dreaming of pink and navy for my guest room. Not sure how the hubs will feel about pink. He tried to bar me from buying flower fabric! Can you believe it?!

By the way– that's Fran Keenan's living room, published in Cottage Living, I think in 2006?
I feel the same way with fabrics. It does speaks. I love your bulletin board! You chose the perfect inspiration image! I can't wait to see your mom's guest room. =)
What a great fabric. I love the gold mirror with the stripes behind it.
Great fabric! Love the bulletin board. Can't wait to see it all come together.
What a great piece you made! I wish we had Hobby Lobbys in Ontario. I'm always seeing bloggers who've found some really great items.
Can't wait to see how the room evolves!

I love it! I am a huge fan of the Ikea as-is section. I drive my husband crazy routing through everything like a crazed person. I can't believe you got that mirror for such a great price. Trip to hobby lobby is now on my to-do list.
I love that! I have the same exact mirror from Hobby Lobby at home. Hmm…might have to pull a copy cat move on this one.
Love!
Bravo Kristen! I love that clipping you saved. Very inspirational and you are just so very creative to turn out that idea. It looks amazing and I can't wait to see the progress unfold.
