I honestly don’t think I’ve ever sourced a sectional for a client yet. Lots of pretty sofas and chairs and loveseats but no sectionals. So the world of sectionals still remains somewhat of a mystery to me.
My husband is pretty adamant that we get one for our basement. I think he he always pictured a basement with a sectional in it and his “vision’ can not be compromised. I have been looking and looking and I just haven’t found anything I love yet.
My top contender is the Henry Sectional from West Elm.
I really love the look of it. Of course we would be happier if we could find something a little cheaper. Some other options I’ve considered:
The Broyhill Abilene Sectional from Wayfair. The price on this one seems really good but I don’t think I could ever buy something like this online without sitting in it first.
There is also the Ikea Ektorp Sectional. I’m not in love with the shape of the arms and I’m not sure how I feel about the slipcover but the price is good.
I also really like this Sullivan Sectional from Rowe Furniture. I’m hoping to go check it out today in person.
I would love your help and opinions. Do you know of any gems I’m missing? Any great places to buy comfortable and affordable sectionals that I don’t know about?
Thanks!
Crate and Barrel has some decent options. I also think pottery barn's Pearce sectional is decent. i've been looking for a sectional for some time myself. It's hard to find the right design at the right price 🙁
We have a sectional and I am not crazy about the arms. It was a totally different style than what I had ordered (or thought I did) but it was such a hassle to get through our narrow doors that it stayed. I do love how we can all snuggle on it and how the leather has held up to 5 crazy kids. I will probably always have one now because I love walking into the room and seeing all my kids lined up watching a movie from it.
I was new to the world of sectionals too, but I needed one since we have 5 kids. I didn't want to spend a lot because, as I said, we have 5 kids. haha I found a great one at Macy's called the Devon sectional. It's very comfortable and looks great! Crate and Barrel does have some great options as well.
The Karlstad from Ikea is an awesome sectional that can be made into different sizes that fit your room. We LOVE the couch and has served us well for a few years now with a toddler!
Kristen, I just have to tell you that I we bought the broyhill Abilene-without sitting on it- and honestly, it's not to bad. I was pretty nervous, but it's worked out well. We have it down in our TV room, and the only thing that I think it needs is a big ottoman, so you can kick your feet up and enjoy. (I'm planning on getting a leather one). The one thing is that I feel like the cushions might not last forever. Our other couches are Stanton-who had a lifetime warranty on their entire couch-cushions included. If they ever got saggy, they would replace them, so they've really, really held up to our wear and tear. So that's what I'm comparing my Broyhill to. We've had it since December, and it's still good. We sit on it alot, and I love the shape of everything, which is why I got it in the first place, I just couldn't find anything I wanted in a store. Anyways, just thought I'd let you know of my review on that couch.
P.S. I'm one of Rosie's friends and came to the shower you hosted for her back in the fall. I've been following you ever since. 🙂
Tatiana
Oh, I forgot, my only other gripe with the Abilene is that the back cushions ARE attached, so they can't be removed. Pro's to that is that my 3 year old can't take them all off every time she's on the couch and jump into a huge pile. Con's are that I'm worried if she ever gets sticky fingers or something on them I can't take them off to wash them.
Macy's usually has nice furniture. I would also check World Market and ZGallerie (who is having a furniture sale). Good luck! Can't wait to see what you choose!
A sectional can provide a lot of seating and retain a comfortable arrangement. They are actually easy to design a room around. I like the Wayfair as well; would want to be sure of its scale and comfort.

Hi Kristen, you probably don't remember me (we went to high school together). I really enjoy reading your blog!
You may want to try Macy's for sectionals. They actually have a really wide selection (with tons of fabric options) and have fabulous sales. We got one there that looks identical to the WestElm Henry sectional, but it was a lot cheaper. We've had it for three years and it's held up really well.

I agree with all the Macy's comments. They run sales all the time and do have nice furniture. After searching for a sectional for what seemed a small eternity we ended up buying one from there : ) Good luck!!!
I am also on the fence about sectionals. I personally like two sofas better but my hubby really wanted a sectional too. We bought the Rowe Furniture sectional a few years ago and we love it. It's comfy for watching movies or hanging out and reading on. It has held up well, especially considering the number of kids that play playstation on it. Best of all, with a sectional, everyone can fit!
I'm also on the hunt for a sectional for our media room. I like the Henry by West Elm too, but I wish it had a chaise! I would have already bought it if it did! You can go on the Broyhill website to find a place near you to see the Abilene in person.
Also, you might want to check out the ZGallerie Phoenix sectional. I haven't seen this in person, but I like the lines of it. http://www.zgallerie.com/p-10794-phoenix-3-piece-sectional.aspx
I second The Karlstad from Ikea! We have one (the couch version) and love the lines, easy care, and price. I know that folks over at another well know DIY/design blog have one for the living room, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do
I have the Rowe Masquerade {slipcovered} and I love it. I have actually used it in at least a half dozen clients homes. My family is tall and this is nice and deep and comfy. With 2 kids and 3 dogs, I throw the cover in the wash all the time. Good luck!
I like the Broyhill from Wayfair. Good luck, I know it's a commitment!

we love our Rowe Sectional. Once a year they have a sale that "any fabric is the same price". It's pretty firm when you first get it home but it softens up nicely! Rowe furniture is a great "value".
I agree with Macy's. Also, JCPenney's has some nice smaller scale sectionals in decent sytles.
sectionals are great for basements and family rooms in general. I have specified a lot of them and my clients are very pleased with their functionality.
besides the obvious ikea, west elm, crate and barrel, macys, I have also used sectionals from Raymond and Flanigan (http://www.raymourflanigan.com/sectional-sofas.aspx?pcnid=1). They have great sales on stock furniture.
Also a recent store I found recently is http://www.sofa.com. They have a great selection of fabric options and they have some retails stores around US.
Hope this helps.
Maria
i have used this particular sectional several times since the price is great (on sale) and it's pretty comfortable. it's much more of a grey green than it appears online (other options are cream, red, and brown but the brown looks a little cheap to me). plus it's local, so you can go try it out. i also like the fact that the scale isn't overwhelming, but it still seats a ton of people (up to 8 people! but 6 comfortably…) one last thing…baby wipes! use them on this sectional and you can clean up pretty much anything. my daughter created a masterpiece on the chaise with a black pen and you can't even see it now. love!

We bought our sectional from Macy's when we bought our house almost 3 years ago, and it's held up wonderfully! It has a chaise on one end, and that's the best seat in the house. 🙂 So comfy. I know they don't always look the best from a design perspective but they provide a lot of seating and make movie watching cozy. Macy's has great sales, and it honestly was the best price for the quality that we found. Good luck!
My husband and I decided to buy a sectional earlier this year. We went to what seemed like a gazillion furniture stores and checked out many options. We finally settled on the Karlstad sectional from Ikea in February and we love it. We added a chaise on to each end of it. We have 3 kids and 3 dogs and I really appreciate the fact that the cover is completely machine washable. Good luck with your search!
My mom bought a HUGE one at Macys 10 years ago, and it has lasted beautifully. The fabric still looks great and it has a lifetime warranty, they are coming to redo the springs this week. My mom wants to replace it with a dainty couch and 2 chairs, but we all protest- "you can't replace a couch that sleeps 8!" It is so comfortable.
We bought the Axis sectional at Crate and Barrel and have so enjoyed it! It is a bit pricey, but in my opinion, it was totally worth the cost. All our friends that come over love it too!
I loved the Axis sectional and wish we would have had more room for it! It was my number one pick, but it was too large for our small living space. So glad to hear you love it!
We purchased our first sectional (the Elliot sectional) from Macys a year ago and love it! It looks very similar to the ones you've posted so you may like it. We thought it was affordable as well.

I bought the leather henry sectional from west elm and absolutely love it! It is so comfortable and whenever anyone sits on it I get asked where I bought it. Good luck furniture shopping is hard!
Hi, we are considering the Henry in leather too. Do you still love it? How has it held up so far? Any feedback would be helpful. Many thanks.
When I worked at SFD in Salt Lake we sold a TON of sectionals! I think you would really like it the extra seating it would provide, especially for a basement. Good luck!
Since you like the look of the WE Henry, you should consider the PB Square. It's a much better quality sectional made by mitchell gold. As someone who works for PB but really loves the WE product better, I'm very familiar with their furniture and it just isn't made with the same quality that the PB sofas are. If you are looking for something that will last forever, I can attest to the quality. The price is higher, but really very worth it! If you have a bit more space, consider the PB Comfort Square Arm. It's deeper & cheaper but great quality too – made by PB's own furniture company in Hickory, NC. Plus, I'm sure you are familiar with the designer discount program!
We have one from Rooms to Go that we love.

I have the Karstaad sofa ( not sectional) in our living room and it's super comfortable and has a more streamlined look than the Ektorp. Also, I bought a cover from Knesting because Ikea didn't have the shade of grey that I wanted. Benz has Ikea covers as well. Gives you some more options when it comes to colors and styles if you can't find exactly what you want.
You will need to move furniture down your stairway, so be sure to consider all dimensions. We're looking at Simplicity Sofas for furniture for our guesthouse (construction to start soon). Their upholstery is made in USA (VERY important to us) and they have sectional pieces available. All of Simplicity's pieces come with optional slipcovers and disassemble for easy moving. Many fabrics available and all items are custom-made. Good prices considering USA-made and made-to-order, because they only sell directly to customers so no middlemen. Look at http://www.simplicitysofas.com/
i was going to suggest Macy's but looks like a bunch of people beat me to it! they have a ton of sectional options. we decided on the Bradley (in mocha): http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/bradley-living-room-furniture-sets-pieces?ID=314814&CategoryID=37394&LinkType=#bottomArea
we love it. i love the lines of it and it's nice and comfy but the thing that really sold me on it is that each piece is individual so you can completely customize it to get it just the right size to fit your space. and if we ever move, we will be able to change the shape of it to fit its new home! i also love that the person sitting in the corner has a spot for their legs because the cushion there is angled. delivery was top notch too. very professional guys who made sure they didn't bump walls and even vacuumed before they left. no regrets! good luck!
My sectional has a rounded corner instead of it being squared off. I love that. I've also seen some cool half-round sectionals (2- 1/4 round pieces) and I think those are high style while still being a sectional.
I just discussed this very same thing last week as we have the same debat in our house. I'm still not convinced but I have found a lot of sectional inspiration on Pinterest.
We have a leather sectional from value city furniture. We really like it and it was reasonably priced.
We had a Rowe sofa and Chair for our TV/play room and it barely lasted 3 years. The fabric was cheap and the inside got very lumpy after a year or so 🙂 I usually buy Hendredon so I know everything else won't be the same. We do have an ikea ektorp sectional in our basement/tv/main play room now that I love. I never thought I would say that!! The quality is better than Rowe and has held up perfectly – best part is the slipcover is durable and easily washable and with kids it's the best! Plus it's the basement, so I cared a bit less about it's very pottery barn like look. I just styled the rest of the basement the way I wanted it! good luck 🙂
I have been looking at sectionals too. I am thinking you can't beat ikea price, 10-year warranty and washable slipcover.
My husband also has wanted a sectional since we moved into our home 3 years ago (must be a men thing). Well we finally found one this week that we both love. Surprisingly we found it at RCWIlley…
http://www.rcwilley.com/Furniture/Living-Room/Sectionals/Fabric/3PCDBAGGRNTCAFE1/2834723/Granite-Upholstered-3-Piece-Sectional-View.jsp#
I think it looks alot better in person then it does online. It was about $100 more to get one additional seat so that one side is longer. It also comes in a lot of different colors and fabrics. I also loved the Henry but my husband didnt approve of the comfort on that one:(
Im excited to see your finished basement! Oh and if you have any suggestions for ottomans I am in need of ideas..Thanks!
I'm about to purchase the Henry sectional second-hand… is it not very comfortable, should I avoid it??
We always have great luck at Ashley furniture. You can get leather sectionals for $1000.00. There furniture stores all out by Ikea have lots of good ones too.
We have the Henry sectional and love it! I got a 20% off coupon on Ebay and that helped cover the cost of the shipping and tax.
Hey Kirsten! If you remember I wanted a sectional when you did your consultation with me. After looking forever I finally decided that what my heart was set on was the Pottery Barn Pearce Sectional. I asked Downeast Home to call me when they got one in- they did and I took it home for about $1,500- would have been cheaper if they had a 20% off coupon going at the time! I love it so much and it cleans up great with my kids climbing on it all day. Good luck!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned RC Willey! It's not fancy I guess but they have great couches and sectionals- when I was looking for ours I realized how important it was to look in person. The sectional we ended up buying I really didn't like online but loved it when I saw it in person. Good luck!
We bought the Henry (in gray) from West Elm last year and absolutely LOVE it! It is super comfy, yet firm, and my tall husband loves it because the back is tall enough for him to sit comfortably. It has been through 3 moves since we've had it and still looks brand new! My favorite choice by far 🙂
You could try Stylus sofas. We have the Lyric sofa in a sectional because it was one of the only ones that had the dimensions we needed for our somewhat small sectional space.
Here's a picture of it in our room.
You can use the locate a dealer link on the website to find a retailer near you.
Happy hunting!
Just look for a dealer near you on their website.
This is the most comfortable sectional! http://www.la-z-boy.com/Product/5649-7307/Sinclair-Two-Piece-Sectional/ When the pillows are taken off it's as wide as a twin and I'll even use fitted sheets on it for guests. We have it it a chocolate brown since it's definitely a family couch for us 🙂 and we love it. It's very durable and very comfortable even five years later. Good luck!
PS The Laz-y-Boy sectional is also very deep.
Hi Kirsten! I have the West Elm Blake sectional, although I'm wondering if I should have gone for the Henry after reading some comments above. Anyway, I'm in your neighborhood, so you're welcome to come take a look if you're interested. Also, another blogger I follow wrote about an Ikea sectional she loved on her blog…http://mydalydesigns.blogspot.com/2012/04/my-new-ikea-sofa.html. Good luck!
Hi Kirsten…thanks so much for responding to my email regarding wood kitchen floors vs. tiles. I had an interesting experience with sectionals and hopefully can help yours a little bit. After countless trips to various furniture stores and sitting on hundreds of couches I narrowed it down to a brand Klaussner. From there I narrowed it down to a specific sectional – Fletcher, you can create any combination you desire. The furniture is made in United States (in North Carolina) and from what i understand there is a factory outlet store where you can walk in and buy things significantly less. However driving to North Carolina was not really an option for me so I priced the couch in my desired combination and then went to a few different furniture stores. I said look i know what i want in the color that i want what's the best price you can do for me? If it's the best price then i'm buying it today. The owner looked it up and said you can have it for X. And the price he quoted was $813 less than the original store i was shopping in. So even at the lower price he felt he made enough profit to justify the sale and i was really happy because i got the exact couch i wanted for much much less.
We just purchased the Henry sectional from west elm for our basement! I am very happy with the quality and how firm it sits, love it and happy with the purchase! I also considered the Sullivan from Rowe, it sits more shallow than the Henry. Hope this helps!

I love them because they can be totally custom and have a wide range of styles. I know the company name sounds kind of scary but they have some great stuff.
Hi Kristen. I just purchased a sectional for my family. I prefer the "two sofa" look but my husband had to have something comfortable. After searching EVERYWHERE we bought one from RC WILLEY of all places. I loved all the options of fabric you could choose, and the fact that is was REALLY SOFT and comfortable. I wish I could attach a picture so you could see it has the arms you like and a bit more of a contemporary feel. It is made by Max Furniture and if you go to the Murray RC WILLEY it's in the back of the store with all of their more current items. There are a ton of fabric options with it too, so you'll know your looking at the right one.. and it was priced right at $2099.99. Good luck! I know it is a big purchase to make and something you'll hopefully have for a long time. I ordered mine in a really light tan with wide stripe linen/cream accent pillows, and had them spray it with their stain protector.. I hope with three kids, I won't regret going so light! 🙂
I like sectionals for a family room or tv room. I do think that the type of sectionals you have featured here have too much wasted space though. That corner part is awkward to sit in unless the sectional has the diagonal seat, rather than the ninety degree seat. Some good options with the diagonal seat are the Buchanan and the PB Comfort Square, both from Pottery Barn.
I would agree that buying a sectional that you haven't sat in first would be a mistake. We have one in our basement that we've had for like 7 years – it's been moved 3 times- and still looks great. We bought it when we lived in Richmond, VA at a local furniture shop and I'm soooo glad we got to test it out before buying it – it's super comfy!
Kirsten, we have two Tillary sofas from West Elm that we use as a sectional and love them! Great fabric, great style, and they really are durable 😉

We have a relatively new sectional from Lee Industries which I love!
http://www.houseography.net/2012/03/family-room-sectional-love.html
We bought a sectional shortly after moving into our new house last year. We have IKEA's Karlstad sectional with the chaise. I seriously love it! I did a lot of searching around…I had list of must haves for the sectional…so I took my time! I am a mom of a 3.5 and 1.5 year old, I needed something that could withstand their craziness, could be easily cleaned, hold up for a while and was within my budget! Our last sofa, only the bottom cushion covers would come off to be washed, I wanted something where the whole thing (everything!) could come off and be cleaned. There are so many different covers for this sectional as well, we actually bought white and tan. I've washed them at least 6-7 times now since buying the sectional and everything is still holding up well. The only thing I would do differently is scotch guard the slipcovers…would make getting little stains out easier! I also follow John and Sherry of Young House Love, so I was able to see how their experience was with the sofa as well. All in all we paid about $1500 dollars, well within my $2000 budget, which included the sectional with chaise, 2 slipcovers and shipping. Oh and another thing I like, having young kids who fall asleep on the sofa every so often, sometimes you get pee pee accidents, well there is another slipcover layer to the sofa pillows, which is removable and washable as well…thank goodness! So that 2nd layer will catch any remaining liquid that comes through so it doesn't get to the foam. Good luck on your sectional search!
Another vote for Macys!
LEE Industries is amazing..but also on the pricier end. Have you looked into Sam Moore? They are incredibly comfortable and have some great fabric choices and are priced very reasonably for the quality/comfort/fabric choices! I know I mentioned The Black Goose in Midvale the other day as a source for Sugarboo Designs…but you should definitely check them out for Sam Moore sectionals. I promise you that you will love them!
We were over at a friend's house yesterday who just had a baby and they have the Ektorp sectional. It's surprisingly super comfortable and we were all able to sit and chat which was so nice. I would certainly get it if we were in the market for one, which we might be soon.
My cousin owns a furniture store here. She ordered a sectional recently… it was made my Temple. Most sectionals are too big this one is "petite". She doesn't recommend Lee Industries-they don't carry it in their store anymore because there were so many complaints. I know some people love it but she found the quality didn't match the price. She has the one with the squared arms. Good Luck! http://www.templefurniture.com/catalog.asp?mode=Room&id=50
Hey Kristen,
I know I'm a bit late weighing in, sorry! We had a PB Pearce sectional and HATED it. The back cushions barely lasted 4 months before looking completely lumpy and sagging. It was slipcovered and did not wash well at all. We ended up upgrading to the PB comfort sectional and it is a dream. Slipcovered in winter white linen/cotton, I can wash and bleach it any time. Plus you just have to fluff the down cushions and it looks brand new. We have six children with four rambunctious boys, so I cannot say enough good things. Plus, it is comfortable!!! Like sitting on a cloud. Hope this helps! Xoxo Kimber
Hi, we are looking at buying the pottery barn comfort square sectional. I want to be able to bleach the slipcovers as needed with three little ones. Did you get the washed linen/cotton or the textured linen/cotton? I assume by winter white you mean ivory? Do you still love it now that it's been a few years? Thanks for the help 🙂

We got the Amalfi sectional from Haverty's and we completely LOVE it! It's very comfy and still looks chic for being such a large piece of furniture.
We got a Norwalk sectional last year and it is AMAZING. It has down in the cushions and it is the most comfortable sofa I have ever sat in…(I fall asleep on it a lot). It took a while for my husband to convince me to get a sectional, but I'm glad that we did. Good luck!
Thanks for all distribution here. I will think more carefully before deciding to choose one style for my living room.

my great aunt use to have a wonderful sectional that broke into 3 pieces which could stand alone as separate pieces of furniture. It was comfy for kids & adults! Plus versatile! Absolutely love my Hancock & Moore September sectional. Worth every penny. Free replacement cushions to original owners.
I hope you found a sectional you are happy with. We lucked out recently and got the Crate & Barrel 3 piece Axis sectional off Craigslist. It is in excellent condition we got if for 1/3 of the original price. There were two on Craigslist with one tan and one a medium brown (coffee). We went for the coffee color. It is kinda big but holy cow is it comfortable and it is is a beautiful suede microfiber with down blend cushions. It should be pretty easy to keep it clean too. 🙂
