If you know me you know that I’m not very big on designing themed kids rooms but I make an exception every now and then when the theme is a really cool one! One of my clients wanted a hunting theme for her son’s room. I got right really excited when I discovered all of the fun “camping” and “outdoorsy” options.
My client already had blue walls so we needed to play off of that which was easy to do.
My client has had Pottery Barn blackout curtains and she wanted to stick with them because she loves how they block out all the light.
After sending my client the initial board she wasn’t 100% sold on the bedding so I revised the room a little. Here is the final look we decided on.
She’s just waiting for a few items to go on sale and then we’ll start pulling the room together!
How do you feel about Kid’s rooms being themed?
This is really really cute. I hate hunting so much but this could be regarded as a theme for an animal lover like myself as well minus the target practice.
Yes! That is a much better way way to look at it. For those of us who don't enjoy hunting we could call it a "camping" room 🙂
love this design. it's not too overboard with the theme, but enough to make any kid happy. plus, i think if you take out all the accessories in a few years and this room could look very grown up.
Adorable, all of my sons would love this! Have to say that I prefer the first bedding though, it just brings everything together so wonderfully!
I really loved the first bedding, but I think both boards are great! I'm fine with a little theme going on as long as it's not overboard. You did a great job incorporating it!
I like themed rooms if they are subtle and the themed elements are easy to switch out as kids grow up. We have that orange lamp in my son's room and it is great!
I don't have a problem with themed rooms as long as elements can be changed out as the child grows. I don't care for the rooms that are too matchy-match. Ones that you can buy every accessory for bed, floor and wall. Your design is just the opposite, I love every aspect!
I like a theme to be shown in the accessories. Kids grow out of everything, even likes, so quickly that I'd hate to spend a fortune on themed items only to have them say they now hate it! With your second board you could easily just replace the posters with a surfboard, giant wave picture and a rustic anchor, and you have a whole new look!
I like a "theme" that makes a room look cohesive. This is a perfect combination. As long as you don't go by the bed in a bag, matching rug, lamp and matching wallpaper border I say go with a theme. Kid spaces are where you can let loose. Can't wait to see it come together. Bedding 1 reminds me of cuddling up in a flannel shirt next to a fire. Love it.
I agree with the others, nothing matchy matchy. This is perfect!!
Great job! This is adorable and super hip. Thanks for sharing all you fun finds. I personally like themed rooms for kids–when they're done this well. I think they make the kid feel so special. One of my big regrets as a designer and mother of three was NOT letting my kids have their themed rooms :(( Of course you need to make some adjustments here and there. No designer should give in to the poly-Disney bedding an 8 year-old client might clamor for. But if you take that princess theme and do something creative and cool, you could have an awesome room like the one you did and a happily-ever-after for everyone. Personally I'm struggling with this now. My middle daughter wants to lose the Schumacher floral linen and Swedish antiques en lieu of black and pink PB Teen-looking pad. I keep telling her the look she's showing me is so down-scale. Mean Mommy. I think this physician needs to heal thyself and let her put her stamp on her space. I'll make it hip, unique and upscale. I'll consider it my personal designer's challenge.
Well done. I love all of these pieces. I don't mind a little theme but as mentioned above, nothing too matchy matchy.
I LOVE this design!!! I like the first board best, but the second is great too. I think themes are fine, especially for kids. It's their room, let them show off what they like:). But keep it simple, not too match-matchy, and easy to switch out.
I actually think the plaid goes better with the theme than the red and white! You had it right the first time…too bad your client didn't care for it. This is a great idea for a theme.

You are SO talented! I love your style and your blog. Would you mind sharing where you got the red striped bedding?
It's from pottery barn. So glad you like it!
so cute, love the bedding and the lights~ I am with you on themes! They date themselves quickly and with boys its much better off to go with more a "boy" theme than a theme….does that make sense?!?:) In my own head it did:)

lol totally! I don't think a princess theme would be ideal for a boy 🙂
Love them both, but I do agree that the first bedding is to die for. Not usually into themes, but this one seems like one that can grow up too.
What an adorable room! I know her son will just love it! Such a fun theme, too!

What bedding would you use if this was a baby nursery? I LOVE it and just might copy it for my new babe on the way. And what color would you paint the walls? I actually don't think this room is that "themed" I really love it!
The client had the paint on the walls before. I'm not sure the exact color. It's just a really nice light blue.
so cute! Love it!
