If you’ve been following my blog you know that designing my nursery was a stressful process for me. It took me a long time to find the inspiration piece for the room. I always start my design process with fabric but I just wasn’t finding anything that I was in love with. I did happen to come across this amazing piece of art.
I decided that this would be my jumping off point for the room. But even with this great inspiration piece I was still having a hard time getting things to come together in this room.
One day I was browsing my local showroom and I came across this fabric.
Something about it just spoke to me. It was like love at first sight! That happens to me often with fabric. After a lot of debate I decided it was just the right fabric for the room. It was playful yet not too childish. It also had so many beautiful colors in it.
I knew I wanted to keep the crib bedding pretty basic so I wasn’t really sure where to use the fabric in the room. I decided to use it for window treatments but I couldn’t decide on curtains or a roman shade.
The nursery was previously used as my office where I had full length curtains.
I liked the look of the curtains but because this room is SO small I started to feel like I’d rather go with something more simple. So the decision was made, roman shade!
I had Melissa from Windows by Melissa make a relaxed roman shade for me.

After the roman shade arrived I decided to do a gray rug.
The rug I decided on was the Homespun Modern Trellis Rug from Rugs USA. I got it on a super sale. Doing a gray rug was actually a huge step for me. I literally have nothing gray in my entire house. Color comes easily to me but working in neutrals is sometimes a little more challenging.
I wanted to do a floor lamp in the room since I didn’t have room for a side table and I also love how floor lamps fill up negative space in empty corners. I picked the Stella Floor Lamp from Urban Outfitters. It is so hard to find unique floor lamps for a good deal. This one is perfect. I seriously would own one in every color.
Picking a changing pad was also a struggle. The changing table I found is pretty narrow so all the changing pads I liked were way too big.
This one from Land of Nod was a favorite but at 18″ deep it would hang way off my changing table.
Eventually I decided on the changing pad from Restoration Hardware.
I have seriously loved it. I got the cover in petal and it is so so so soft. Plus it washes so easily. She has puked, peed and pooed on it and so far it’s still in great shape.
The crib bedding was one of the easiest decisions for me. I have always loved the basic crib bedding from Serena & Lily.
I ordered the bumper and crib sheet in punch.
The crib sheet was a little harder to decide on. There really wasn’t anything ready-made that I was loving. I stumbled across this Firecrackers in Pink fabric by Schumacher at my local showroom.
It is from Lulu DK’s new line for Schumacher. I felt like it would make an amazingly cool crib sheet. I discovered Fern Leslie Baby on etsy and contacted her about making a custom crib sheet out of this fabric.
I wanted a really comfortable rocker for the room but those can be really expensive so I decided to buy one on Craigslist and have it reupholstered. I purchased this beauty for $10.
It was in pretty rough shape so I enlisted the help of Brian Maxfield from Rocky Mountain Upholstery to reupholster it. I chose Pindler Callahan Blossom for the fabric.
Yes it’s pretty vibrant. This fabric does not mess around. It is loud and in your face but it’s just the “punch” this nursery needed.
I have a lot of empty wall space in the nursery so I knew I needed to fill it somehow especially since I wasn’t doing floor length curtains. There was a lot of empty space next to the windows, above the changing table and above the crib. Picking art for a small room is challenging because you don’t want anything that crowds the room and makes it feel smaller.
As I mentioned before I originally wanted to use the Sugarboo art but after staring at the roman shade for awhile I decided it would be too much of the same thing.
I really wanted the fabric to be the star and not have to compete with the art. So I set out to find art that enhanced and supported my roman shade instead of competing with it.
I saw this image on Alice Lane’s blog and I fell in love with this sweet art.
I ordered these three prints to go above the crib from Sugarboo.
On the other side of the room was the changing table which I blogged about here. I needed something large and in charge for this wall. I worked with Minted to pick out a piece from their new art print collections. I had a few different options picked out on my boards.
It took me awhile to decide on a piece. I went back and forth between these options:
I’m saving what I chose as a surprise so you’ll have to tune in tomorrow!
