When we moved into our home we literally had nothing to put our t.v on. I found this retro credenza at a garage sale and immediately thought of all the ways I could transform it.
My initial thought was to paint the entire thing in high gloss white and then paint or wallpaper the inside. However, after pursuing Design Sponge for like an hour last night my mind is open to so many different possibilities.
I am so overwhelmed at all the options and my goal is to have it completed this summer so I just need to decide on something!
What do you think?
How fun! I like the idea of either painting the front & wallpapering the sides OR painting the sides & refinishing the front. You could also think of doing a graphic pattern on the front – like chevron???
All of these are lovely, but I especially like the fabric-covered front option.
I wouldn't put any busy pattern in the front bc I wouldn't want to distract my eye to much while watching tv. I'd save the fun patterns for sides and top. This is gonna be such a fun project! I can't wait to see what you do with it! Do you mind me asking how much you paid? You've inspired me to get out there early Saturday morning for some good garage saling!
I've been reading your blog for some time now and this one really caught my attention- I'm going through the same ideas right now. I love the look of painting the exterior white and leaving some pieces of wood finished!
All great ideas Kirsten. I'm really digging the 2nd one, wallpaper the front and paint the sides. Can't wait to see the end result of whatever you choose to do!
They are all so gorgeous, but I'm drawn to the ones with either the wallpaper on the front or the sides. Maybe because I love pattern – but they are so beautiful! Can't wait to see what you decide to do!
I like the wall paper in the front and paint on the sides but all of them are cute. For me, it would depend on what else is going to be in the room. And I can't help but notice you posted that at 4 am. Is this what my life is going to be like after kids? 🙂 I am excited to see you! The invitations were so cute! Thanks!
Wow, lots of fun options! All would look great, but I personally would paint it a glossy white, and then the front I would paint with a gray/white graphic print, like stripes or chevron (like the first commenter). Have fun!
Nice choices! It's a great piece! If it was mine 🙂 I would paint the outside and possibly the middle drawers a creamy white and leave the rest wood! Have fun choosing, I'm sure you'll get some amazing suggestions! xx
I love the one that has the wallpapered sides and top!
what a fun project! I think I like the white with the print~ but whatever you do I am sure it will be fab! can't wait to see the finished product!
If someone would have told me a papered credenza would look great I might not have believed them. But I love the look. I see your dilemma.
WOW, that piece is amazing! Lucky you! I would wall paper the side doors, and paint the middle doors 2or three different colors that coordinate and paint the outside white or grey 🙂 Can't wait to see what you do to it!
i say paper the front two panels and paint the rest. can't wait to see the results!
I love the ideas, and mostly the wallpapers on sides, painted front. I want to do the same!!
Obsessed with the wallpaper option, and would want to use that EXACT paper! OBSESSED!
depends what else is going on in the room. If you have a lot of other patterns in there, I'd keep it simple. I love the look of stained sides and white doors. with a surprise on the inside!
I just finished a similar piece but I had to paint it because of the condition it was in. Here's the link:

The wood on your piece, however, looks like it is in great condition. While I love all the options, I'm not to sure I would paint it. Of all the options, I do like the fabric front or just painting the outside. Why not experiment with wrapping or contact paper first before making a final decision? Love your blog and became a follower. Hope you will visit me as well. Good luck with your decision.
owwww. I love the second pic! Cant wait to see what ya do~
Love the wallpaper sides and top and paint front but I also like the idea of adding some interest to the sliding panels… can't wait to see.
thanks for posting my nightstand!!! we love white and wood together….so fresh. have a great day!
I don't know what the rest of your furniture is like but I would probably paint the whole thing white and paper the inside. That or paper the top and sides.
I'd love to see this painted white and with a fun pattern on either the top or the two front doors. But whatever you decide I'm sure will look great. Have fun with it!
I am so happy to read this post. I too bought a credenza at a garage sale this last summer and have been wondering how to finish it. I like the wallpaper on the top and sides, I just wonder how the wallpaper would hold up on the top.
Um…number 1, love your stand. I like the painted exterior and the refinished front…or vice versa. And I would wallpaper the insides so that they can "pop" too. SO many great ideas!
I like the idea of wallpapering the front and painting the inside! Looks like a fun project 🙂 Good luck!
I'm absolutely in love with the idea of wallpapering the front and painting the inside…but I think all the options are lovely! Can't wait to see what you decide!
Wow, everyone has an opinion! I don't like the two-toned look of glossy colored drawers with stained sides. Not at all. The wallpaper idea is pretty cool though!
i like the idea of wallpapering the front sliding cabinets and painting everything else. good luck! pam
You have a great piece you're starting with – you really can't go wrong! I've spent some time tonight trying to wallpaper, with green imperial trellis, the front of some drawers in a little cabinet in my bathroom. Actually a little trickier than I thought on the edges – tried spray adhesive, modge podge, elmers etc. Will send you the final result…. Can't wait to see yours!

awesome! i love it how it is OR your original glossy white idea. i love painting everything glossy white lately though:)
the wallpapering is a rad option, such cool wallpapers right now.
I'm going to throw my vote in for either wallpapering the top & sides and painting the front -OR- painting the sides white and refinishing the front. I'm not as big of a fan of a busy fabric or different colors painted on the front. With it being a piece your TV is on, I feel like it would be too much going on visually.
I love fixing up furniture. The possiblities ARE endless. I am a huge fan of color so I vote for some color pop!
great inspiration!!! I have a halfmoon table and billpayer desk I want to redo…these are great possibilities!!
Cant wait to see your finished product!!
I swear, I took a hiatus from blogging for a while but your blog; i religiously checked during that time!! Love it!!
Love this! Love Love Love!
I really like the hanging fabric!
What a great find! I'm jealous! Stuff like that is hard to come by here in Utah. I really like the mid-century style, so I'd opt to keep some or all of the wood. I love the contrast of wood and white too. (Ironically my blog post today was about modern walnut and white kitchens.)
you really have a blank canvas in there!
