Sometimes our client’s need really simple fixes to little problems. I thought it might be fun to show a peak into how we tackled this latest one. Our client had shelves FULL of books.
She didn’t want to spend money on new shelves so we decided to try our best to spruce up the basic Ikea shelves that she already had.
The first thing we did was take ALL the books off and arrange them by color. We broke them down into reds, whites, purples, yellows, greens, creams, grays and blues.
On one side we took out one of the shelves to make room for a large starburst and some art from Minted. Because there are so many books it’s a good idea to break it up with other things like art and unique accessories.
We also hung art on the outside of the shelves to hide some of the less flattering books.
These simple tips can take any basic bookshelf to a new level!

Although this looks pretty, how do you know where to find a book and how long will it last in its color-coded state with little hands pulling off and putting back books? It seems that it might get really frustrating to worry about the color-codedness of the book shelf! Has anyone tried this with kids and had success?
Hi Janika!
That's a great question. If you notice we put all the random books that didn't have a specific color on the bottom shelf that way it doesn't matter if little kids get to them.
Looks great and certainly something that can be achieved in a few hours – plus adding interest with the art and other little objects.
what a difference! I love the mix of shelves with only books and shelves with only decor…really helps give the eye a place to rest. fun fix!
